LOCATION:

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Chloe Sells divides her time between Botswana, Africa, where she photographs with a large format camera, and London, England, where she processes and prints her own work. Sells employs analog techniques in the manipulation of her landscapes through layering of image, color, and texture in the unique chromogenic prints. Creating a dream-like effect, Sells’ landscapes transport the viewer into unknown realms and evoke the fragility of the natural world.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Born in Aspen, Colorado, Chloe Sells received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2000, and her Masters in Fine Art from Central St. Martins in 2011. Sells currently lives and works between London and Maun, Botswana.
Since her childhood growing up surrounded by the mountains of Colorado and her extensive travels in adulthood, she has revered the sublime beauty of nature. Using medium and large format film cameras, she produces unique C-type prints in the darkroom with analog, experimental methods: screens, overlays, open-weave fabrics and movements of the paper are expertly combined to create her bold and dreamy images. Manipulating the image with multiple techniques of layering of image, color, and texture, Sells imbues her work with a emotional interpretation of each environment. She says her photographs interpret place as a memory or as an evocation of a feeling “I can smell them and I can feel them. Feel the air, feel the light.”
