Siebren Versteeg
The Wall,
2010
LOCATION:
University of South Florida, Tampa
WUSF TVB Lobby, 2nd Floor
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
An interactive site-specific installation comprised of two 46-inch high-definition LCD monitors, a small external PC, and a computer program that allows viewers to contribute content that is displayed in real time. Both monitors display a digital rendering of the wall on which they are mounted. While one monitor displays a ‘zoomed-out’ image, the virtual area of which measures 87’ x 52’, the other monitor displays a 1:1 ratio digital rendering of the real wall. Viewers touch can touch either screen to activate the program, which can be used to “graffiti” and add content to the virtual wall. The program does not include an eraser, viewers can email jpgs of sections of the wall to any recipient.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Siebren Versteeg (b. 1971 in New Haven, Connecticut) mines the digital realm for content, hacking and manipulating systems of image dissemination found in cyberspace. Creating algorithmic programs that respond to and distort online content, Versteeg then presents the results as still painterly abstractions, or displays the programs on monitors balancing choice and chance.
Versteeg received his B.A. from the Art Institute of Chicago and his M.F.A. from University of Illinois at Chicago. He has had solo exhibitions at the Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita, Kansas; the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio; the Museum of Art at Rhode Island School of Design, Providence; the Art Institute of Boston; Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Chicago; and 1R Gallery, Chicago. His work has been exhibited in group shows at the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, DC; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Contemporary Museum, Baltimore, Maryland; the Krannert Art Museum, Urbana-Champaign, Illinois; and the National Museum of Art, Prague; among many others.
Versteeg currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
